After receiving £1.15 million in funding from the Welsh government, Alert Logic chose Cardiff as the base for the SOC because of the good transport links and local universities researching cyber security, and hopes to grow the number of employees from around 130 to 300 over the next three years.

The SOC will be staffed by local security and threat intelligence experts 24 hours a day and seven days a week with the aim of transforming “raw security event data into actionable incidents, providing a valuable perspective on global threat activity.”

Staff will scour and analyse various multiple threat intelligence feeds and deliver security content to the Alert Logic Cloud. The firm says that the SOC will enable the team to protect customers through rapid detection and enable them to respond to cyber threats irrespective of their location.

Officially unveiling the centre today, Welsh government economy minister Edwina Hart said: "I am delighted to welcome Alert Logic to Wales and the technology and expertise they bring. The decision to locate their new European headquarters in Central Cardiff Enterprise Zone sends out a strong, clear message that the city is a prime location for technology companies and can offer all the essential elements for growth including a high-level skills base and infrastructure."

Alert Logic CEO Gray Hall added that the firm had established the SOC – and the newly-launched data centre in nearby Newport – to be ‘closer to our European customers'.

"The opening of our new European SOC, coupled with our recently launched UK data centre, enables us to be closer to our European customers, delivering them continuous protection, and deep security and compliance insight, no matter where their IT resides, whether it's in the cloud, on-premises or in a hybrid environment."
