Businesses accept that malware is a part of every day business
Enterprises now accept attempted cyber crime as a regular part of their work.
According to a survey, around half of respondents (49 per cent) acknowledge that security breaches occur but accept them as a cost of their business. Also 64 per cent said that malware problems remained the same over the past 12 months, while 27 per cent said that problems had increased.
John Vigouroux, CEO of M86 Security, who conducted the research along with Osterman, said that the survey confirms that ease of entry and sophistication of modern malware provides an open door for cyber criminals.
“What was surprising was that the majority of businesses felt they were better protected than other organisations while experiencing the same number of attacks as their peers,” he said.
Respondents said they had experienced an average of five attacks during the past twelve month period, relating to an attack every 73 days. Of the 70 per cent of organisations that reported some financial loss following a malware attack, 59 per cent said that the cost of an attack was around £31,000.
Michael Osterman, president of Osterman Research, said: “With more than 78 per cent of organisations experiencing malware breaches during the last 12 months, it's clear these attacks are becoming a part of the fabric of the internet.
"What's surprising is the degree of complacency these companies exhibit in light of the uptick of malware and complexity of the recent cyber attacks, even among those tasked with caring for data which can include customer information and intellectual property.”
