Combined anti-virus, application control and patch management in new Lumension technology
Lumension has combined anti-virus, application control and patch management into a new intelligent whitelisting technology.
Claiming that current technologies are either outdated or too complex for small-to-medium businesses, Lumension SVP international Alan Bentley said that it has combined the three to reduce overheads to the environment and to create a trust-centric rather than a threat-centric model.
He said: “People need a combination of things to integrate patch management, people are spending money on traditional anti-virus when it is not effective and the customer is ready for something new.
“This platform gives simplicity and a broader reach on the marketplace. Anti-virus is not the leading control for the endpoint, with application control you should be in control of the environment and lock down what you know to be good. Anti-virus is used as cleaning and still has a place in the security stack, but do not rely on it as a way to stop malware from exploiting, as you will come undone.”
According to Lumension, new features of Intelligent Whitelisting enable IT to fully deploy an application whitelist policy in an audit only mode and log all execution attempts within the whitelisted environment. Policy definition has also been made easier with a local snapshot capability that captures all existing applications on endpoints and enables IT to define unique whitelist policy baselines in highly variable environments.
“If a critical vulnerability patch is released, it can tell you three days later what has not been patched or you can create a group for priority. We have not dumbed-down the functionality and with the three together it is relevant to all organisations and we have not removed any functionality from it,” said Bentley.
