Cyber-Security Month: It's time to champion cyber-security jobs
Ahead of Cyber-Security Month in October, we spoke to Ben Goodson, recruitment sales manager at SC Jobs, about IP Expo and the hottest jobs in the sector

What is Cyber-Security month and what does it mean to you?
In a world of increasing data requirements, too many people still don't understand the importance of cyber-security. Cyber-Security Month is a chance to voice the risks organisations face if they fail to implement robust cyber-security measures and to communicate why this is vital for driving businesses forward. By taking small steps now, businesses can save themselves huge repercussions in the future. This awareness month is also a good opportunity for professionals to network with each other to discuss key issues they are facing, exchange ideas for the future and broaden their horizons.
What will SC Jobs be doing as part of Cyber-Security Month?
We will be attending IP Expo Europe on 5th-6th October 2016, which is a large-scale event at the London Excel exhibition centre. It attracts over 15,000 industry professionals, including recruiters and potential applicants, all under one roof. We will be on hand at the SC Magazine stand V13g to offer advice to recruiters on how to get the most out of their recruitment advertising and how to write effective job advertisements. I can also advise jobseekers on their job-hunting strategies, CV and interview tips, where to look for vacancies and how to get the most out of their career paths.
What are the hottest jobs in the sector at the moment?
There is a particularly high demand for penetration testers who are key professionals responsible for testing the integrity of a business' cyber-security practices. If you are looking for a job as a penetration tester then be flexible to opportunities in different locations and types of companies. We are seeing a big wave of companies needing these services and this positive momentum certainly indicates a healthy career path for the next five to 10 years.
Data protection officers are also in demand and will increasingly be required in the coming years, across the private and public sectors. The 2018 deadline for businesses to comply with the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) means more data protection officers will be needed and forward-thinking companies will be recruiting well in advance.
There are also plenty of opportunities for information security analysts - an imperative role for many organisations as they shield a company's computer systems and networks from infiltration and cyber-attacks.
In terms of locations, cyber-security roles are generally based in big cities, especially London and Manchester, as this is where information security companies tend to be based. However, there may be some remote working opportunities and a small number of roles located in smaller regions.
