Email security attention increases as companies aim to avoid data loss
UK companies are pushing for email security to avoid data loss.
A new study by Gartner found that repeated incidents of data loss and the associated bad publicity are behind a four per cent growth of the IT security market forecasted for 2010.
The study also found that effective email security is one of the most important requirements for UK businesses at present.
However MXSweep claimed that while this increase should be welcomed, organisations should view bad publicity as an unwanted side effect of a security breach rather than the main symptom.
Ed Grant, CEO at MXSweep, said: “It is important that organisations recognise their responsibility to protect sensitive information and act accordingly rather than through fear of public embarrassment and punishment.
“While bad publicity has significant repercussions, the initial security breach could result in extended periods of downtime, infrastructural damage and the loss of confidential information, not to mention the possibility of identities being compromised. Repercussions like these, and the fact that cybercrime is on the rise as a result of the recession, are the real reasons companies should increase security.”
Grant further claimed that even though the attention may have shifted from email security threats, the danger is still present and on the rise.
“In our most recent threat report we documented how from late May through June there was a sharp rise in the number of new viruses being circulated via email that were not caught by the major anti-virus engines,” said Grant.
“Findings like these not only justify UK businesses prioritisation of email security, they also highlight the need for organisations to ensure they purchase solutions equipped to deal with the real threats targeting us today.”
