Europol 15 today
Europol, the EU's law enforcement agency whose stated mission is ‘making Europe safe,' celebrates its 15th anniversary today. In a press announcement, EU Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmström notes that Europol is ‘playing a key role' as its work has led to ‘children being saved from exploitation and sexual abuse' and the dismantling of ‘large organised crime groups'. She added that, despite criminals recently being assisted by advances in technology and the Internet, Europol will continue on its goal to eventually eliminate crime in Europe.
The organisation handles more than 18,000 complex cases each year; including human trafficking, cybercrime and intellectual property crime.
With a staff of some of the best multinational and multilingual security professionals in the world, Europol is now based at its new headquarters in the Hague. It is the backbone for two million law enforcement officers from more than 30 countries.
