German consumer groups challenge Facebook terms of service

Backed by the German Justice Minister, German consumer groups will be filing a lawsuit against Facebook, according to a “cease-and-desist” letter sent to Facebook's European headquarters in Ireland. The lawsuit calls for the social network to change its terms of service, within which the consumer groups have identified 19 clauses that currently breach German data protection law.

In response, Facebook said that it was reviewing the complaint, but was "surprised" that the complaint "focused on settled terms and features that have been part of Facebook and other online services for the past 10 years, such as real-name policies,” according to a statement given to the AP.

"We recently updated our terms and policies to make them more clear and concise, to reflect new product features and to highlight how we're expanding people's control over advertising," the company said. "We're confident the updates comply with applicable laws."
