Google begins protecting against ads of dubious origin

Google has expanded its Safe Browsing protection to protect users from deceptive embedded content like social engineering ads which display fake download buttons and fake alerts for Adobe Flash updates.

Announcing the move on its Online Security Blog, the company said it is targeting deceptive tactics that try to trick users into doing something dangerous, like installing unwanted software or revealing personal information.

Consistent with the social engineering policy which Google announced in November, the company says embedded content like ads on a web page will be removed if they:

  • Pretend to act, or look and feel, like a trusted entity — like your own device or browser or the website itself
  • Try to trick you into doing something you'd only do for a trusted entity — like sharing a password or calling tech support

Google is advising site owners that if their website is flagged for containing social engineering content, they will need to troubleshoot using the Search Console which is part of Google Webmaster Tools suite.
