Imprivata announces new capabilities to platform

Imprivata has announced new capabilities within its appliance-based OneSign platform.

The new capabilities are focused on strong authentication management and end user workflows, with support for biometric readers and ‘walk-away' security along with the introduction of PIN authentication and fast user switching support.

New authentication management will enable customers to utilise a greater variety of strong authentication options to deliver enhanced security. The Authentec biometric sensor support allows users to leverage the embedded sensors found in many common virtual machines.

With the platform now supporting the vast majority of embedded fingerprint sensors, it will allow customers to leverage these devices for complete enterprise and shared deployment while also enabling users to mix and match readers in their environment.

The enhanced walk-away security will allow a proximity card to lock the workstation, set an inactivity time and hot key for system lockout and utilise smart card removal and enabling Xyloc badges to lock the previous workstation during Citrix session roaming.

Geoff Hogan, senior vice president business development at Imprivata, said: “We offer secure authentication on to corporate networks which can benefit small and large companies from with applications from five to 25. All of these applications have passwords that people will frequently forget.

“For the 4.1 version we found that in 2008 organisations wanted to extend their security authentication and we are now hosting biometric authentication, as laptops have embedded fingerprint authentication we are now continuing support for both of the major vendors of fingerprint technology.

“We are also doing more to extend the walk-away security and solving the problem of how systems can be shared among users without violating privacy laws. We offer a system of a fingerprint and proximity card, which the user will use against a reader when they leave their work area, so that they can secure the desktop when they leave it and a new person will be able to use it.”

Jon Oltsik, senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group, said: “Companies require strong authentication capabilities to fortify their security architecture, but seek flexible options their employees can utilise to make adherence to policies easy as they go about their workday.”

Elsewhere enhanced session management capabilities enable employees to focus on productivity. With fast user switching for multiple desktops, multiple users on a shared workstation can access their personal Windows desktop without having to log on and off of Windows each time a user switch occurs, providing ‘hot application' access.

Hogan said: “You can also have multiple users on the same workstation with their own desktops which will save time in shutting down a session and reloading under another login, the user will use their entry details and the other person's desktop will revert to the background. Then the next person will not have to re-login and in a situation where speed and urgency is needed this can be critical.”

Omar Hussain, president and CEO of Imprivata, said: “More than half of our growing customer base incorporates strong authentication into their working environments and utilise OneSign as the integrated management point, demonstrating the real-world value this, combined with single sign-on and physical-logical access integration, delivers to companies worldwide.”
