Infamous hacker extradited to the US
Dutch authorities confirmed this week that Vladimir Drinkman will be extradited to the United States, where he will potentially face a prison sentence of 70 years.
Accused of being the mastermind behind “Shadowcrew,” the hacking group known to have executed some of the largest cyber-attacks to date, Drinkman specialised in accessing the networks of multinational corporations including that of Nasdaq, OMX Group, Carrefour and JetBlue Airways, in addition to Global Payments and several other of the world's largest payment providers.
Though Russia has also requested Drinkman's extradition on cyber-crime and fraud charges, Dutch justice and security minister, Ivo Opstelten, has ruled that the cyber-criminal will be received by the US, as their request predates Russia's.
In addition to prison time, Drinkman, charged in the US with conspiracy to gain unauthorised access to computers and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, will face as much as £800,000 in fines.
