Microsoft has announced that it is to release five bulletins next week on its June Patch Tuesday.

It will deliver one critical bulletin that addresses issues in Internet Explorer and four important-rated bulletins that address issues in Microsoft Windows and Office.

Ziv Mador, director of security research at Trustwave, said: “Although just because there are only five bulletins this month, doesn't mean we shouldn't pay attention to them.

“First if you are planning ahead, note that four of these bulletins will require a restart after installing and the fifth one might, probably depending on what else you have installed. Definitely pay attention to bulletin number one, which is a critical remote execution flaw in Internet Explorer, which looks like it impacts versions 6 through to 10.

“The rest are all rated important, with an elevation of privilege, a denial-of-service and an information disclosure issue in Windows and a remote code execution issue in Microsoft Office. The interesting part about the Office patch is that it impacts Office 2003 SP3 and Mac Office 2011.”

Paul Henry, security and forensic analyst at Lumension, said: “It's a record month for Microsoft this month. With just five bulletins, June marks the lowest number of bulletins we've seen from Microsoft to date this year, making it a light month for IT administrators.

“One final thing to note is an additional advisory from Microsoft slated for later this month. It's an update to improve the photography and digital certificate handling in Windows, adding additional functionality to allow administrators to more granularly handle certificate trust lists.”

At the halfway point of the year, Microsoft has released a total of 50 bulletins so far in 2013, eight more than at the same time last year. “Interestingly, the company has issued exactly the same number of critical bulletins so far this year at 16, that means the balance is made up of important bulletins that are the type of bulletins we prefer to see,” Henry said.
