Palm Pre criticised by bloggers over location tracking
The Palm Pre has been criticised for tracking users locations without their knowledge.
Writing on the securityandthe.net blog, author Martin asked if users would like it if they knew that the manufacturer of their phone was tracking their location every day to give them a ‘great user experience'?
He claimed that this is what the Palm Pre is designed to do as the feature is built into the phone.
“For instance, when location-based services are used, we collect their information to give them relevant local results in Google Maps. We appreciate the trust that users give us with their information, and have no intention to violate that trust.”
Blogger Joey Hess also noticed his Palm Pre sending the location information exactly once every 24 hours, where it included information about which applications he was using and for how long.
Martin wrote: “I'm sure this can somehow be necessary to ‘enhance your device experience', but I'd certainly like to know whether or not my phone sends this info before I buy one. In my honest opinion, Palm will either need to provide a better explanation of this ‘feature' or provide a way to disable it altogether.”
