Phishing scam hacks British Gas Twitter account

Some peculiar tweets from the British Gas Help's Twitter account were popping up on Monday. Though rather innocuous sounding, the tell tale comments like "I'm laughing so much right now at this," and "haha this tweet by you is cool," were a sharp indication that the account had been compromised.

Less innocuously, according to press reports the tweets included a shortened link sending users to a false “Twitter page” asking them to sign back into the site. Upon logging back into Twitter, users exposed themselves to leaking their personal account information to the phishers, including usernames and passwords.

The hacked tweets were quickly removed by British Gas, which tweeted in response: “We are aware our Twitter account has been compromised. Please delete any spam tweets you have received. Sorry for the inconvenience.”
