Security vendor SonicWALL has announced a new appliance aimed at SMEs.

The NSA 2400 is targeted at organisations with less than 100 staff as well as branch office sites, and is an extension to SonicWALL's unified threat management (UTM) portfolio.

It offers intrusion prevention as well as file and content anti-virus and anti-spyware inspection, to try to prevent malware and phishing attacks affecting the corporate network.

The product offers granular application control that can be set by user or IP subnet.

"With the introduction of the rack-mounted NSA 2400, we are bringing a full-featured, high performance UTM solution to the small and mid-sized business market at a fraction of the cost of competitive offerings," said Jon Kuhn, director of product management for SonicWALL.

Competitors in the UTM space include Checkpoint and Fortinet.

The company is enjoying success selling its range of security and back-up products. Its revenue rose 23% year-on-year, according to its quarterly results released at the end of April.
