A former director of the US National Cyber Security Center and Microsoft employee has been appointed as chief information security officer of Sony.

After lengthy attacks against its PlayStation Network and other divisions, including Pictures, Sony has hired Philip Reitinger to the newly created role.

Reitinger will act as senior vice-president and chief information security officer for Sony. According to net-security.org, he will oversee information security, privacy and internet safety across the company.

“Certainly the network issue was a catalyst for the appointment. We are looking to bolster our network security even further," a Sony spokesman told Reuters.

With anything from 10 to 77 million people affected by the Sony breaches, the company previously said that it would create a CISO position in response to the initial PlayStation Network hack.
