The Tumbleweed MailGate provides solid email protection and management in one device. It not only filters spam and protects from viruses, it can also protect the whole mail system from being overwhelmed by botnet attacks, directory harvest attacks or denial-of-service attacks. These features are all part of Tumbleweed's Intelligent Edge Defense System. The MailGate further protects against accidental data leakage through a solid content filter.

This product is easy to deploy and manage. Setup takes just minutes via the web-based setup wizard, which quickly guides through the initial setup steps including licensing and network and domain configuration. Administration is done through the well-organised web GUI with its intuitive navigation feel.

Policies are created and managed by using policy manager, which is the system's policy engine. The appliance comes with some predefined policies already in place, providing a good start to further customisation and policy building. The policy manager supports more than 300 attachment types, keywords, patterns, wildcards, visible and hidden content in documents and multiple default dictionaries.

Three main PDF manuals make up the documentation. The quick-start guide briefly details how to set the intial configuration for accessing the setup wizard. The setup guide describes the setup wizard and intial configuration procedure. The administrator manual provides details of policy configuration and using the product features. All the information is clear, well organised and includes many visuals such as screenshots and diagrams.

Tumbleweed offers various support levels: gold, platinum and platinum plus, or the technical account management programme, which includes a dedicated support consultant. All these levels provide various types of phone and email support as well as access to the Tumbleweed support portal.

With a price tag of £5,300, this product is good value for money. The MailGate offers a lot of punch in a very easy-to-manage appliance for the price.
