Users remain concerned about fraud and identity loss

Two thirds of Britons are concerned that they will be affected by identity loss in the future.

The research by Stonewood also found that 61 per cent of respondents felt that the Prime Minister's admission last year that the current Government 'can't promise that every single item of information will always be safe' was unacceptable.

Chris McIntosh, CEO of the Stonewood Group, said: “Twenty-nine million people have been affected by data loss in the past year alone, so clearly the Government is not doing enough to protect individuals' data.

“The Government must ensure that the punishment fits the crime, and that businesses are held accountable. It is no longer acceptable for there to be any excuses; businesses can and should be protecting their data.”

In agreement was Acronis, whose research found that companies are still mishandling customers' private data. David Blackman, general manager for Northern Europe, called for companies to take preventative measures to keep data safe.

Blackman said: “About a third of UK employees are not protecting their important data either by throwing sensitive documents in the bin unshredded or by not protecting their data online – both of which can lead to identity fraud. This is worrying enough, but there is another way that data is also being seriously compromised and that is through the disposal of old PCs.

“Companies need to start taking responsibility for protecting their customers' sensitive data and wiping hard drives securely is an easy way to do so. It can be a very simple process if using a secure disk cleansing solution. Some of these have been approved by, and are used by, government defence agencies as well as Fortune 500 companies around the world. It is definitely better to be safe rather than sorry.”
