QUICK READ

  • Strengths:

Covers most Windows operating systems for single or enterprise installations to provide a rounded solution to anti-virus requirements.

  • Weaknesses:

    There was nothing to dislike.

  • Verdict:

Certainly suitable for the SME market, and with Computer Associates behind it, Vet AntiVirus is sure to develop into a world-class product.

Vet AntiVirus covers most Windows operating systems so that you can protect this type of environment with relative ease. Making up a reference disk, as Vet calls it, for a boot disk if you are doing a completely new installation is a prerequisite. But the documentation is pretty thorough and walks you through the process with ease. Where you already have a resident anti-virus solution in place this must be disabled prior to starting your Vet AntiVirus installation.

You can install to a single PC or you can accomplish a master installation for all your workstations, which can be rolled out across the network. Updates then need to be made to ensure the relevant protection. The GUI is typical of Windows and you get all the usual things such as scanning, on-demand and heuristic over a variety of drives, files and folders.

Reporting and logging are provided, as are alerts. Boot sector replacement is possible where a virus has been detected in this area. Updates can be automatically configured and your settings can be password protected to ensure the integrity of your anti-virus configuration is upheld.

Although a solution may be easy to install, configure and manage it is its performance that will set it apart, and we put Vet AntiVirus through its paces against our stringent SC Magazine anti-virus tests.

With one very smooth and perfect test result, Computer Assoc iates has shown that it knows what it's about when it comes to anti-virus protection. However, how will Vet AntiVirus match up to eTrust in the SC anti-virus tests?

With the first two tests it passed through without any problems to end on a quality 100 percent result for both. Similarly Test 3 posed no more problems than the first two.

Next came our second division collection, which fortunately Vet found no challenge either, to end on 100 percent.

It also encountered no problems against the macro collection, recording another perfect 100 percent score. In the speed test it delivered in 2 seconds, putting itself up there with the fastest solutions.

It was accurate with the more prevalent viruses and coped very well with the entire test.
