Spam levels have reached an all time high, according to the latest figures released by Ipswitch, a network monitoring company.

The survey found that 95 per cent of all emails were identified as junk messages – a jump of 25 per cent compared with the same period last year.

According to Ipswitch, medication-related spam accounts for a quarter of all messages and tops the category list for a second quarter running.

Pornographic emails make up 21 per cent and undecipherable messages, many containing embedded images, account for 18 per cent, while twelve per cent of spam is phishing emails.

The figures echo a SoftScan study released earlier this month. It showed that spam levels in August hit a record for the monthly survey, with 97 per cent of emails classed as junk.
