Verizon extends security services with Fortinet tie-up

The telecoms carrier has broadened its security portfolio with the addition of the FortiGate appliances, which will be offered both for straight resale as well as part of a managed service

Telecoms carrier Verizon Business has extended its security capabilities through a deal with unified threat management (UTM) vendor Fortinet.

Verizon said on Wednesday it would offer Fortinet's FortiGate appliances which include firewall, anti-virus, anti-spam, VPN, web content filtering and intrusion prevention capabilities. The appliances are best suited for either medium-sized businesses or those with a remote workforce.

The Fortinet kit joins Cisco's Adaptive Security Appliances (ASA) and Juniper Networks' Secure Services Gateway (SSG) in the Verizon stable.

"As a vendor-neutral security solutions provider, Verizon Business is committed to delivering leading-edge technology that best suits specific customers and their unique needs," said Kerry Bailey, vice president of Verizon Business Security Solutions. "Expanding our existing UTM offerings to embrace Fortinet demonstrates that commitment."

Verizon will offer the FortiGate appliances either as a simple resale, or as a managed service. The managed service includes advice on where the UTM should be located within the business's security architecture, and monitoring and management of the firewall, VPN and intrusion detection services.

Although it is traditionally a telecoms player, Verizon Business is now pulling in some security deals.

Earlier this month it revealed a 10-year deal with the US Department of Homeland Security in which it will provide managed IP and security services. The $678m contract will include building a security operations centre for the DHS.

Fortinet has had its own success, providing FortiGate appliances to over 200 Harley Davidson dealerships in the States.
