Ex-Mastercard exec reveals top postcodes for identity fraud

News by Richard Thurston

And it's not good if you live in London...

London residents are far more likely to have their identity stolen than anyone else in the UK, according to a former vice president of Mastercard.

Peter Warner revealed that 19 out of the top 20 areas for identity theft are within Greater London.

Topping the list is SE16 (Greenwich), followed by CR0 (Croydon) and IG11 (Barking).

Maidenhead in Berkshire is the only area outside London to figure in the Top 20: it came in fourth.

With that exception, all the top eight postcodes are in either South or East London, and most are in the Capital's poorer areas.

For six years, Warner was Mastercard's vp of security and risk, responsible for managing the company's anti-fraud operations. Now an advisor to security consulting firm Comsec, he revealed the findings to a select group of governance professionals in London last week.
