SpamTitan enhances web filtering technology, as claims made that a more granular approach is needed for social networking access

SpamTitan Technologies has announced the release of the latest version of its WebTitan web filtering solution for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

It said that version 3.50 of WebTitan now includes advanced reporting capabilities and increased management flexibility to allow for data to be shared quickly between departments as required.

Users can access over 1,000 types of reports from web browsing activity by customers or domain to time spent online or bandwidth consumption. It is now also possible to export reports to PDF format as well as CSV file for further extrapolation if required and the new dashboard monitoring function provides customers with an at-a-glance summary of browsing in real-time.

Speaking to SC Magazine, Ronan Kavanagh, CEO of SpamTitan Technologies, said that the company had moved from hardware to software appliances, with a focus now being put upon virtualisation.

He said: “This is the latest version that has been launched following interaction with our customers on where perhaps it could be improved. Visibility and the ability to create reports were the number one need, as users want to know what employees are doing on a day-to-day basis.

“There will be some change on the product with an upgrade to the content filtering engines, but with the IT department there are requirements based on current tools and if management want a personal report rather than a technical report they can have one.”

Research this week by Webroot found that companies are becoming more vigilant when it comes to their employees' use of social networking sites. It found that from a survey of more than 1,000 businesses, 81 per cent have an employee internet policy, but 50 per cent deny access to any social networks via the corporate network.

Kavanagh said: “Several years ago, people were accessing pornography and gambling and how did they deal with this from an HR perspective? Now we are seeing the issue of productivity coming in and with software and social tools like Twitter and Facebook it is changing the requirements and it is becoming more difficult to block things.”

Gerhard Eschelbeck, CTO of Webroot, said: “Clearly the potential impact of social networks as a threat vector has hit home for IT administrators. One in six of those we surveyed said a social networking site or Web 2.0 application was the source of an infection or attack and over half of companies said their network was infected with spyware this year.

“Every company needs to develop a policy for social networking use and should also deploy reliable web security services for ongoing protection against zero-day threats.”
