As a data security analyst, you will be responsible for managing information security for your employer, ensuring the internal infrastructure and network is secure and complies with regulations.

As a data security analyst, you will be responsible for managing information security for your employer, ensuring the internal infrastructure and network is secure and complies with regulations.

The role of a data security analyst involves protecting information on computers and data networks by installing and maintaining security software, implementing strategies to ensure networks are free of breaches and imparting information to computer users around security. Organisations may refer to this role as computer security specialist.

The day-to-day

  • Planning security measures and controls

  • Installing and managing security software, intrusion detection and prevention systems

  • Maintaining and monitoring security software and detection systems and updating software and systems where required

  • Conducting security audits across IT platforms and networks

  • Investigating incidents using security information and event management (SIEM) software products and services, data visualisation and pattern analysis

  • Analysing and reporting on anomalous behaviour

  • Recording and investigating potential security threats and escalating those findings to relevant parties

  • Supporting information assurance processes and making recommendations for improvements

  • Developing security policies and strategy

  • Keeping abreast of latest IT security measures and controls

    Key responsibilities

    • Following and developing data security procedures

    • Conducting data security assessments and reporting on security threats

    • Implementing end user controls across employee IT devices

    • Meeting data security compliance policies and regulations

    • Maximising network performance by monitoring performance; troubleshooting network problems and outages; and scheduling upgrades

    • Communicating security threats, results of security audits and current practices to key stakeholders

    • Maintaining, verifying and validating inventories of computer systems and networks

    • Directing training for all employees, or other third parties with information security clearance on the company's information security policies and procedures

    • Troubleshooting office hardware including servers, desktops, laptops and routers

    Key skills

    • Solid data IT security skills including SIEM

    • Expertise in data protection regulations and good knowledge of ISO 27001, the specification for an information security management system (ISMS)

    • Experienced in firewall and intrusion detection/prevention protocols

    • Hard skills in DLP, anti-virus and anti-malware is expected

    • Windows, UNIX and Linux operating systems know-how is advantageous together with some C, C++, C#, Java or PHP programming languages

    • Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, computer networking, routing and switching skills

    • Proven skills in information assurance

    • Good aptitude for data analytics and data administration

    • Ability to identify security threats, trends and anomalies

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to write concise reports

    • Skilled at dealing with a range of technical and non-technical stakeholders

    • Logical thinker and creative problem solver

    • Flexible attitude and willingness to work to tight deadlines and change course where necessary


    A Bachelor's degree in computer science, cyber-security or a related field is desirable but it is possible to be offered a job as a data security analyst if you can show you have experience in the relevant field and/or hold some related qualifications such as relevant Certified Intrusion Analysts (GIAC) or CREST qualifications.

    Relevant experience

    • Past experience in a data security role is beneficial

    • Knowledge and experience of using a corporate security incident system is advantageous

    • Proven experience of conducting security audits and raising incidents to relevant parties


    Contractual hours are typically Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm but there may be a requirement to work outside of normal hours should it be required.


    Salary will depend upon organisation, experience and sector. Most security data analysts can expect a salary in the range of £37,500 and £62,500.
