The Sesame Street YouTube channel was hacked last night to display pornography.
According to Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, the content was available for all the world to see for approximately 20 minutes, before the channel was suspended for ‘repeated or severe violations of our Community Guidelines'.
The hackers also changed the channel's profile on YouTube so it read ‘Who doesn't love porn kids? Right! Everyone loves it! I'm MrEdxwx and my partner mrsuicider91 are here to bring you many nice content! Please don't let Sesame Street to get this account back kids :( Please...let me and Mr Suicider 91 have it and we gonna make all the America happy!'
However MrEdxwx later published a static video denying responsibility, which reads: “I did not hack Sesame Street. I am an honsest youtuber. I work hard to make quality gameplay videos and most important I respect the community guidelines.”
A statement by Sesame Street parent ‘Sesame Workshop' on its Facebook page, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience our audience may have experienced today on our Sesame Street YouTube channel. Our channel was compromised and we are presently working with YouTube/Google to restore our original content. We always strive to provide age-appropriate content for our viewers and hope to resolve this problem quickly.”Cluley told SC Magazine that the channel was not on the Sesame Street website but anyone who viewed the channel had access to the content.
He said: “Whoever had access put a handful of videos on the channel so someone got hold of the password and uploaded to it. I have nephews and nieces who search for Sesame Street and X Factor videos, so they could have gone to this and the statistics for the page show that there has been 500 million video views.
“People will subscribe to this channel too and when there is an announcement of a new video it may have been accessed. This would have been bigger in the US due to the time of day.”
Speaking on the identity of the hacker ‘MrEdxwx', Cluley claimed that it is unlikelyto be him as he would not have identified himself so easily, as he has a channel and is identifiable. “Why would he have incriminated himself to do it in his name? He needs to consider who has a grudge against him and Mr Suicider 91, my guess is that they upset someone and this is their revenge,” he said.
