Android security solutions have been launched by AVG and Trend Micro.

Building on its AVG Mobile Solutions smartphone application, it said that AVG Mobilation for Android tablet can scan applications, settings, data and media files in real-time for viruses and other malware.

According to AVG, if the tablet gets lost or stolen, it can be remotely traced and wiped to protect privacy. The backup feature also protects contacts, call logs, bookmarks, messages and installed applications to an SD card. The ‘app locker' can password protect any app on the tablet to prevent children using certain applications or data.

Omri Sigelman, VP of marketing and products at AVG Mobile Solutions, said: “A mobile device is more personal than your computer at home, as it goes next to your wallet and your house keys and contains relevant data, your contacts, your family photos and memories.

“AVG Mobilation for Android tablet protects you from the threats that target precious data in mobile devices. It can even help you to locate your device on Google Maps and remotely wipe it if it should get lost or stolen.”

Also, Trend Micro has announced its Mobile Security for Android solution that scans downloaded apps for malware and is intended to provide a safe surfing experience for online banking and shopping on Android devices.

Trend Micro chairman Steve Chang said earlier this year that the Android operating system was more vulnerable to exploits than Apple's iPhone platform.

Rik Ferguson, director of security research and communications at Trend Micro, said: “The Android app ecosystem is by definition open. There is a wide array of app stores available and apps are therefore ready for use by the user community in minutes.

“This greater openness of the developer environment has arguably fostered an atmosphere of creativity, but as Facebook has already discovered it can also be a very attractive criminal playground.”
