Summary

BiGuard S10 is an appliance with an extensive feature set. The SSL VPN provides access to many types of common applications such as Microsoft File Shares, Remote Desktop, VNC sessions, FTP, Telnet and SSH, as well as HTTP and HTTPS access to internal sites. The BiGuard S10 offers several types of user authentication as well. Options include most common types of Radius authentication, NT Domain, Active Directory, LDAP and authentication to a local user database.

In addition to the SSL-based VPN, the appliance incorporates an IPSEC-based alternative. This offering truly scales for any size organisation, because features such as a PPPoE client on the WAN interface allows the device to work in small and medium- sized enterprises.

The installation of the BiGuard S10 was extremely simple. The product has a total of five interfaces that allow multiple LAN connections to different switches or hubs for greater internal connectivity. The entire configuration takes place via a web interface, which is the same one clients use to gain access to internal services.

The web interface is uncluttered and very well laid out. From start to finish, we were able to configure SSL-based VPN access to a Microsoft SMB-based file share in less than ten minutes. The interface is so logically presented that most administrators will have little trouble configuring and administrating the device.

The S10 SSL VPN appliance arrives with two printed guides. The administration manual is well written, and the beginning of the document covers the quick installation components. The almost 300-page-thick guide further includes advanced configuration options for almost every type of deployment, as well as sections on troubleshooting. The second guide is solely for Mac operating system clients, and this volume is equally well put together.

Support is offered by phone and is included with the purchase of the SSL VPN unit. The company's website also includes a support portal with documentation and firmware downloads.

The pricing for the BiGuard S10 SSL VPN appliance starts at £295 and, considering the number of features the unit has to offer, this represents tremendous value.
