Camden Borough Council has selected Computrace from Absolute Software to protect its laptops and the data held on them.

The council operates a mobile security policy strategy based on industry-standard recommendations around password protection, hard disk encryption, data protection and computer tracking and has already activated Computrace on 1,300 of its laptops.

The Computrace Agent is virtually undetectable and calls home to the Absolute Monitoring Centre with IT asset information including the physical location of each device. If a computer is reported stolen, the Absolute Theft Recovery Team works on behalf of the customer to gather evidence from the computer to identify where it is and who is using it, then they work with local police to get the computer back.

Ian Lawrence, technical services manager at the London Borough of Camden, said: “Computrace was the only solution that met our standard for achieving the final part of our mobile security strategy. With Computrace, even if someone steals a laptop and makes an attempt to remove the agent, the technology simply rebuilds itself. It is the solidity and the extra security hardening that Computrace offers that made it a big plus for us.”

The council will also use Computrace to establish how many laptops it has in deployment and how often they're being used, and geofencing so that there is an automatic alert if the device goes outside the boundary.

“Computrace is a significant benefit to Camden because of the peace of mind it gives us, but perhaps the critical point is public confidence. If one of our laptops is lost or stolen, we can say it was password protected, it was encrypted and because of Computrace, we can remove the data and even have the means to recover it,” said Lawrence.

Dave Everitt, general manager EMEA at Absolute Software, said: “When it comes to the public sector, effective IT security and data protection are not optional, they are essential. Computrace will give the council's IT and management teams assurance that even if the worst happens and a laptop is stolen, its data can be wiped immediately and the hardware returned safely.”
