Colt and Ciena have partnered to provide a high-speed managed network encryption service.

Developed to transfer high volumes of data, the solution is a further development of Colt's managed security services portfolio, the company said. The partnership with Ciena will combine optical transport technologies with standards-based encryption functionality.

According to Mike Hollands, director of solution and segment marketing at Colt Enterprise Services, the service addresses issues of security in the private network and solves embedded encryption challenges.

The offering limits the latency generated in the process of encrypting data to just several microseconds, according to the companies, and the low-latency capabilities of the solution aids in the reliable and secure delivery of mission-critical applications.

Bob Munns, product manager at Colt, said: “Working with Ciena allows us to offer a managed encryption service while the customer manages the keys but cannot see the data or the keys. This gives the knowledge that they are on a secure system as we manage the transmission layer, as all users are being driven towards data security at the core of the service.”

Duncan Ellis, director, systems engineering, EMEA partners and enterprise at Ciena, said the offering reduces complexity for users, with Colt managing the network and the customer overseeing their own security.

Holland said: “This is encryption built into a system, not requiring extra boxes. By following this strategy, organisations can avoid the scenario of being caught by surprise by a sudden security breach that damages customer confidence and leads to serious and expensive legal ramifications.”
