The deal regards the use of Cryptography Research patents to enhance the security of Samsung's tamper-resistant smartcard chips against differential power analysis (DPA) and related attacks.

 

A DPA attack involves monitoring the fluctuating electrical power consumption of a target device and then using advanced statistical methods to derive cryptographic keys and other secrets.

 

Under the agreement, Samsung can use CRI's patents as part of its strategy to develop and enhance its security chips used in smartcards. The licence also covers software executing on Samsung chips, allowing Samsung's customers to develop their own security countermeasures without a separate licence from CRI.

 

Kit Rodgers, vice president of business development and licensing at CRI, said: “Cryptography Research is pleased to have reached this agreement with Samsung. This agreement is a significant milestone for both our licensing program and security efforts in the smartcard industry.”
