Research by ESET claims that UK workers show a lack of cyber-awareness, with many unable to identify common internet security terms which puts them at risk from hackers. ESET conducted a cyber IQ test on 1,000 UK workers with results showing that the majority is still not clear on at least one area of cyber-security even with the growing nature of cyber-attacks today.

The results show that only 29 percent of respondents understood that a more complex password - with a range of symbols, numbers and letters - was more effective. Despite mobile attacks being an ordinary method of attack, 12 percent said cyber-criminals cannot attack mobile devices as well as PCs and 46 percent were not sure.

However, 87 percent of survey respondents were able to identify the phishing tactic. “Phishing is without a doubt one of the biggest threats to consumers so it is very reassuring to see that the majority are aware of the threat,” said Mark James, a security expert at ESET. “However, consumers need to understand that anti-virus is only part of the solution, they also need to be careful where they click.”

Almost a quarter (23 percent) of those polled thought that having anti-virus software installed meant they were fully protected from all cyber-threats. James commented, “Our study has shown that consumers are still very behind in terms of cyber-awareness and could be putting themselves, and the organisations they work for, at risk. Cyber-criminals are constantly looking at ways to exploit mobile devices and consumers should be aware of this.”
