In an interview with SC editor Paul Fisher, cyber warfare expert Richard Stiennon says that the West needs to get real about cyber war but that any response needs to be carefully considered.

"I'm not a proponent of offensive cyber weapons because they are ill-defined. The repercussions and collateral effects of a weapons grade virus into the environment would do more damage than good," he said.

In a wide-ranging interview, Stiennon gave his views on the NSA, legislating against social networking and Google in China.

Richard Stiennon is an independent security expert and analyst and was previously CMO at Fortinet, VP of threat research at Webroot and VP of research at Gartner. He was speaking at the Cyberoam Partner Conference.
