FBI investigating possible Russian hack of NY Times

News by Doug Olenick

The FBI is investigating the possible hack by Russian intelligence agencies of the New York Times and other news organisations, according to a CNN report.

CNN cited unnamed US officials who said that recent intrusions that have taken place during the last few months at the New York Times and other media outlets are being looked at by the FBI. In addition, the Times has brought in an outside firm to investigate the situation, according to CNN.

"Like most news organisations we are vigilant about guarding against attempts to hack into our systems," Eileen Murphy, senior VP of communications for the NY Times, told SCMagazine.com in an emailed statement. "There are a variety of approaches we take up to and including working with outside investigators and law enforcement. We won't comment on any specific attempts to gain unauthorised access to the Times."

The unnamed source, as told to CNN, believes the hacks are part of other Russian attacks on the Democratic Party and are an attempt by Russian intelligence to gather insider information on the American political system.

Dimitri Sirota, CEO of BigID, told SCMagazine.com on Tuesday that he believes these breaches are in keeping with the surge in cyberattacks against entities beyond US government agencies and that cyber is increasingly becoming a weapon/tool of espionage.
