Strengths: New interface for management is quite easy to use
Weaknesses: Still no setup wizard
Verdict: May take a bit to set it up but this one is strong on features
Fortinet's FortiGate-200B-POE combines multiple security components, including an intrusion prevision system, stateful-inspection firewall, anti-malware, anti-virus, anti-spam, web filtering, IPsec, SSL VPN, WAN optimisation and SSL inspection.
It can be customised based on four separate threat subscriptions, including anti-virus, intrusion prevention, web filtering and anti-spam services, which allows for deployment flexibility.
The initial deployment of the FortiGate appliance is done by connecting it to the network and accessing the web-based interface to do some basic configuration. There is no setup wizard; instead setup is done by following a few steps in the quick-start guide. Once these are complete advanced configuration is necessary to fine-tune the appliance. It can also be configured from a command line if the user wants to do it that way instead.
This appliance has come a long way since we first reviewed it several years ago. The biggest improvement we find is the interface itself. The FortiGate products of the past had a very cumbersome management interface that made administration quite difficult. Even though the new interface uses the same basic navigation structure, it is much easier to move around in and was more intuitive.
Documentation provided with this product included a short quick-start guide and a few other PDF guides, including an administrator guide. The quick-start guide offers step-by-step initial configuration instructions using both the web interface and the command line. The rest of the guides offer in-depth configuration and management information. All of the guides included many screenshots and step-by-step instructions.
Fortinet offers 90 days of free 8/5 support included with the purchase of the product. After the 90 days, additional support can be purchased at various levels including 8/5 or 24/7. There are also free resources available on the website, including a knowledgebase and product documentation.
At a price starting at £2,777 we find FortiGate-200B-POE to be good value for money, as it included a good amount of functionality and was easy to configure.
