Astaro has introduced a free firewall to its flagship security gateway.
The company claimed that the Essential Firewall includes all the necessary functionality that all organisations need to secure their networks and operate a successful business.
Gert Hansen, Astaro's chief software architect, claimed that the offering is similar to the one did earlier in the year with VMWare, to which it got ‘great feedback', and it is now moving into the virtual world but allowing small companies to use this in the same manner.
Hansen said: “We now see that small organisations need security so we offer a special license that limits the functionality of it. This is free forever and includes all updates, support and we will issue a hardware application which will come with a one year warranty. Once a company has the product installed they can upgrade to other functionality and make sure everyone is protected.
“This has worked well and the success is what is bringing this to companies. This will give essential software for free and it will stay free.”
Hansen also stated that the Essential Firewall will protect remote workers, as when they connect to the network they can use the functionality through the VPN and access the network behind it, and also route traffic through the firewall.
Astaro CEO Jan Hichert, said: “Small and medium sized businesses are affected by the current economic climate even more so than larger businesses. This is why we see more and more businesses fall back to consumer products to secure their IT environment – in order to reduce costs, they lower their level of security. This is a dangerous compromise. By launching the Essential Firewall edition we aim to provide those companies a professional alternative.”
