BitDefender has released a free removal tool for the so-called 'most complex botnet' TDL4.
Described as being indestructable, TDL4 hit the headlines last week following research by Kaspersky Lab about its connectivity, malware distribution and the number of computers it had under its control.
BitDefender said that TDL4 is one of the few threats that is able to infect both 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows and once it has successfully infected the computer, it compromises the operating system's security and integrity, which may prevent some anti-virus solutions from detecting and eliminating the threat.
Therefore, it has added a free detection, removal and disinfection tool for TDL4 to its anti-malware solutions. Users who are not BitDefender customers can download the free removal tool for either 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Windows from Malware City.
Catalin Cosoi, head of the BitDefender online threats lab, said: “We have been monitoring this threat since it first emerged. Whilst it has no direct damaging potential itself, the danger lies in how it is used by other pieces of malware to hide themselves and gain access to computer privileges.
“Especially as this threat has the potential to prevent detection and removal by some anti-virus solutions, downloading our free removal tool is the sensible way for users to ensure their computer is not infected.”
