Strengths: Solid vulnerability scanner with many predefined scanning profiles
Weaknesses: Reporting functions are confusing to use
Verdict: Very competent scanner with a bit higher price tag
GFI LANguard provides a vulnerability assessment engine, able to discover more than 15,000 vulnerabilities, including Microsoft missing patches in various languages. It can scan CVE, OVAL and TOP SANS vulnerabilities across the network and uses an update engine that runs in real-time and synchronises the local vulnerability database with the latest releases.
Installation was simple and it took only a few minutes to get up and running. The installation is done through launching the install application that is guided by a short setup wizard. After installation, all scanning and configuration is done using the LANguard application. The interface is clean and well organised and most of the scans are configured through a wizard-based process. We found this product easy and intuitive to use end-to-end.
GFI LANguard uses a large number of default scanning profiles that can be further customised in order to change the amount and type of information that it extracts from the network. If these profiles need to be customised or changed, the user can do it in a few simple steps via the interface. At the end of the scan, it shows a summary of the results in an easy-to-read layout. In-depth reports require the installation of additional no-cost tools. We found the reporting tools a little confusing and difficult to use.
Documentation is in a single PDF user manual. This covers the product from installation, giving detailed information on how to use and configure it and its features. It has many screenshots, configuration examples and step-by-step instructions.
GFI provides 30 days of free technical support with the purchase of the product. Ongoing support is provided as an annual support contract at a price of 20 per cent of the purchase price. This includes phone and email technical support.
GFI has a free support area on its website that includes access to a knowledgebase, user forum and product documentation downloads for LANguard.
At a price starting at £25.60 per IP for 10-24 IPs, this product can become expensive for larger environments. However it is moderately priced for the functionality it offers. We find it to be good value for the money.
