GFI MailSecurity 10 is a software-based email security application that secures inbound and outbound SMTP messages or email servers. The product installs in Windows 2000/2003 and is available in either 32-bit or 64-bit. MailSecurity 10 supports various versions of Exchange, Lotus or any SMTP-compliant server. The software can be installed as a mail-relay/gateway solution or directly on the email server itself.
Installing MailSecurity is fairly easy, but there are several minimum requirements that you will need to meet before implementing the product into a Windows environment. The software also uses IIS, so administration is performed remotely using a web browser.
The administrative console is easy to use and user-friendly. When viewing the interface, it is fairly obvious where you should go to configure each of the core features, including anti-malware, anti-spam (a separate purchase and installation) and content filtering. All of these features work nicely, but we would have liked to see a more mature content filtering aspect of the application. The product contains several nice options for configuring anti-virus and web-mail scanning with several signatures that clean scripts and other malicious content.
For more granular filtering, MailSecurity uses keywords and phrases to scan message content, but you cannot filter for specific identifiers such as credit card or social security number formats. Also, the solution relies more on signatures for anti-spam and does not contain any sender- or domain-based verification or IP reputation mechanisms. From a reporting perspective, you have to download the report templates as a post-installation exercise, since the default installation does not contain any pre-built templates.
We were surprised at the lack of help files or documentation within the web interface. Our only option was to download PDFs or refer to an online HTML file within the GFI support site.
Phone and mail support through GFI is available free for 30 days. A maintenance contract will have to be acquired after 30 days at £66 or 20 per cent of the cost. The GFI website support section has knowledgebases, downloads and FAQs.
