Anti-malvertising service relaunch targets shady online advertisers

Google has launched a free service that aims to allow site owners to run background checks on online advertisers.

The custom search tool, called Anti-Malvertising, has been revamped and relaunched to combat the trend of using legitimate sites to spread malware.

“All web publishers are potential targets for malware authors attempting to spread their software by hiding malicious code within an ad's SWF (Flash) file, GIF file or landing page. If an advertiser or agency provides you with an infected ad, your computer and personal information - and that of your site's visitors - can be exposed to serious harm”, states the site.

MessageLabs reported in May that an average of 1,149 new websites per day were distributing malware and other potentially unwanted programs such as spyware and adware.
