A mid-year update to HID's top 2016 security trends has been released. During the first six month's of the year, HID stated continued progression in market adoption of mobile solutions and interest in the Internet of Things (IoT).
HID's mid-year updates to the trends that the company forecast in January are as follows:
Trend #1: Mobilising security will make it more pervasive and personalised. Computer and network logon, driving licences and other apps will more seamlessly join physical security functions on phones, tablets and laptops. Wearables will be the next step. Phones will also work with RFID tags, adding security and trust to the IoT for proof-of-presence applications.
“With mobile adoption rates continuing to grow and greater emphasis on security issues, striking that balance between security and convenience is becoming more important than ever before. Fortunately, there are now new opportunities to turn smart devices into versatile trusted credentials for accessing doors, data and cloud apps, as well as carrying driving licences and other IDs,” said Julian Lovelock, global VP of strategic innovation at HID in emailed comments to SCmagazineUK.com.
Mid-year update: Demand for mobile solutions continues to grow, along with an increasing focus on security issues. The meaning of mobility is a also expanding to incorporate the broader idea of “on-the-go” convenience and efficiency. In a recent deployment at the CityPoint building in London, security guards are able to use their smartphones as NFC readers to check keys in and out and prove presence at shift checkpoints.
Trend #2: Security will move to a greater focus on the user experience, helping to close the gap between planning and compliance while ensuring that security adapts to, rather than defines, end-user habits and lifestyles.
“As smartphone usage becomes more widespread and every more straightforward, providing a positive user experience is paramount. With the average person now holding an array of online accounts for purposes such as shopping and entertainment, it's important that we look beyond relying solely on passwords in order to provide a pleasant yet secure user experience. Biometrics is a clear leader in this area, but there are also other ways of replacing the password, including push notifications sent through a secure channel or asymmetric-key-based digital signing for real-time transaction approval or rejection,” said Lovelock.
Mid-year update: Customers continue to want an easier, trustworthier way to use digital identities to access on-the-go services and applications. Biometrics continued to emerge as an effective solution for bringing security and convenience together.
Trend #3: The industry will enter a new chapter of connected identities, using multi-layered security strategies that also include biometrics to bind these identities to their real owners.
Mid-year update: A huge growth of trusted digital identities began ushering in new innovation opportunities being fuelled by a growing interest in wearables and use of sensors for IoT-based solutions and serve as important points of unification for trusted identities that make digital interactions more personal, contextual and valuable, paving the way for innovations that enhance the user experience.
Trend #4: More attention on privacy in growing connected and mobile-first world.
Mid-year update: The need for embedded security and privacy technology has increased due to a forecast of 5.5 million new things getting connected each day in 2016. Biometrics also plays a pivotal role in privacy protection.
Trend #5: Security policies and best practices will become as important as technology advances.
Mid-year update: Two key policy issues emerged: protecting privacy by using a smartphone's Bluetooth connection so users wouldn't need to physically relinquish their smartphones to officers and officials, and ensuring citizens can control what data is made available to others. Demand grew for services that help customers deploy innovative solutions to meet compliance, security and risk management needs, while enabling new, value-added capabilities.
