The Information Security Forum has expanded its membership for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

This new ISF membership, for companies with a turnover of less than £100 million, recognises that SMEs face many of the same challenges and compliance requirements as large enterprises, but without the same in-house resources, skills or budgets.

As an ISF SME member, any employee involved in IT security, risk management and audit have unlimited access to the ISF member website, with over 400 authoritative reports, powerful web-based tools such as the ISF Security Healthcheck, as well as online forums and discussion groups.

Steve Durbin, VP sales and marketing at the ISF, said: “It is difficult for even the largest organisations to build the level of understanding and skills needed to keep abreast of information security issues, understand emerging risks and develop best practice solutions.

“That's why many of the world's major corporations, public sector bodies and government departments are ISF members and now we are making it possible for SMEs to harness the knowledge, resources and tools to reduce their information risks.”

Ian Moyse, EMEA channel director at Webroot, welcomed the move, claiming that there was a need for SMEs to be confident of a safe and secure internet experience.

He said: “Users operating from smaller businesses are under as much threat of attack as a user in a large corporation. Spyware, spam, phishing and other internet attacks do not discriminate between user types; they see them purely as an end email or IP address, an endpoint that could be an ideal new victim.

“A smaller business needs to protect its users as much as a larger company, but with less resources, expertise and budget. Therefore educational materials and guidance on how to achieve better protection simply and at lower cost, such as adopting Security-as-a-Service will prove to be an invaluable suite of tools for SMEs looking to ensure the security of their web and email systems.”
