The security and quality of ICT across the public sector is a pressing concern. Right across the UK, there's still much to do to ensure important and sensitive data is handled effectively, efficiently and safely. With most people now using some form of IT in their work, any new policies needs to be consistent and clear to understand. That's why the government is putting laws in place to ensure high standards in information management. And that's why we're now looking for experienced IT or business professionals to join us in these strategic roles.
As one of our Security Managers, you'll apply your knowledge to create policies, processes and procedures to protect council information. We'll look to you to ensure these measures are implemented and ensure they're complied with. But to succeed, you'll need more than just technical knowledge and experience – you'll need the ability to communicate with and influence all kinds of people.
Essentially, you'll be an authority across the council on all IT security issues, from encryption and remote access authentication to network renewals and trading standards. You'll provide advice and guidance across our departments and with external suppliers and stakeholders too. And where necessary, you'll organise security training and other activities to raise awareness of the issues and promote a culture of awareness at every level – from part-time workers to senior executives. It's all about getting the message across clearly and concisely.
Technically speaking, you'll need extensive knowledge of a range of operating systems, networking protocols and desktop applications, including the latest versions of Windows, Citrix and MS Office. Not least, you combine a good grasp of ISO 27001 with experience of firewalls, Active Directory security, and assessment tools.
