Intelli-Pass Biometric Access Control
Strengths: Split architecture design provides solid security in access control; free technical support for product life
Weaknesses: Nothing that we found
Verdict: Excellent product with a solid security architecture - gets our Recommended rating
Black Box's biometric system uses latest-generation fingerprint verification and a unique split architecture design to provide solid security in access control.
Black Box approaches this by placing the fingerprint reader and keypad portion of the architecture on the non-secure side of the site, while the decision-making portion of the architecture and network connection are located separately on the secure side. This means it can be operated independently on a single door, or hundreds of systems can be linked via a central enrolment and management software package.
Installation is a two-part process that requires some wiring of components. The main head unit needs to be wired to the controller box, which is then connected to the network. After this is completed, the setup of the server is done by installing the management software and using it to connect and configure the unit. The server software is easy to use.
When a user is enrolled, the system stores a template representative of the user's fingerprint, which is connected to a four-digit PIN number unique to that user. The units can be set to either provide door access or for time and attendance. This provides a great amount of flexibility throughout the system, as access and time logs can be managed from one central point.
Documentation is in the form of two paper manuals. An installation manual provides wiring and physical installation instructions and clear diagrams, making wiring easy. The software installation manual clearly outlines getting the management software working.
Black Box provides free phone and email technical support for the life of the product. Customers can also purchase an extended warranty, which includes dispatch of a certified repair technician to the customer site free of charge for repair/replacement of the unit. The website support area has a knowledgebase and FAQs.
At £1,999 for the standalone system, we find it to be good value for money. It is easy to use and provides integrated biometric physical security and time and attendance management. It wins our Recommended award.
