The Isle of Wight Council has selected Becrypt Trust Client as part of its ICT strategy to provide secure mobile working.
Trusted Client will be supplied to senior managers, case workers and mobile staff and will enable them to access the council's VPN securely from any location. Roger Brown, ICT strategic development manager at Isle of Wight Council, has ordered 400 licences for Trusted Client.
Brown said: “As part of our buildings rationalisation programme we needed to have a secure and cost effective remote access method, that is also GCSx CoCo compliant. Becrypt Trusted Client has a simple, customisable interface that allows us to centrally manage and control the end-user experiences.
“Not being tied to council offices to check on email and work will also enable our staff to be more productive. Trusted Client's small footprint has meant that we have been able to reuse otherwise redundant laptops, that have limited memory to run some desktop applications. It also forms part of our overall risk management strategy to ensure that our information is secure.”
Becrypt Trusted Client will be used as part of a complete secure technology solution comprising VMware View and thin client desktop virtualisation software, via the council's secure VPN. Trusted Client works off a host computer but restarts it, booting into a corporate OS image.
The host hard drive is not accessed so there is no cross contamination of malicious code and no data can be saved locally. Users have limited access to only those network drives and files that they need to do their job and they are not able to install any additional applications.
Marc Hocking, CTO at Becrypt, said: “The public sector is facing rationalisation of a magnitude not seen in a generation. To meet the government's austerity measures it is not going to be a case of simply skimming ten or 20 per cent off budgets, it is a case of finding completely different ways of working.
“We have many local authority customers that have found that by deploying Becrypt Trusted Client as part of a secure mobile working solution they have managed to address broader issues, including reducing required office space and costs, green travel issues and improving staff morale and productivity.”
