LANDesk Security Suite
Strengths: Very flexible, all-inclusive security and patch management platform
Weaknesses: Difficult to manage, weak documentation.
Verdict: Look at this product if you need total protection rather than just anti-malware management
The LANDesk Security Suite is a module of a much larger, fully inclusive, security management tool for networks. The LANDesk Management Suite drives the boat, while modules, such as Security Suite make the boat stronger. This suite detects viruses, spyware, adware, keyloggers, Trojans and other malware. This product can also manage the Windows Firewall, network access control and the gateway, in addition to providing patch management.
This product is loaded with features. However, it is difficult to deploy and use. While testing, we ran into many problems when it came to installing and configuring. The overriding issue is that the product does so much that managing the security piece was a confusing task.
The main console has a clean and organised look, but we found it was not intuitive at all. The console was awkward to navigate and we had to search the manuals for some time before being able to operate it.
However, the Security Suite can be a massive security powerhouse. It offers a lot of flexibility and protects against many threats. It also provides integration with many of the leading third-party anti-virus products, such as McAfee, Norton, Sophos, Symantec and Trend Micro. These products, as well as Windows Firewall all can be managed enterprise-wide from one console.
Documentation consists of many PDF manuals - each piece of the system has its own set-up and user guides. However, while documentation is abundant, it is not well documented or organised, and finding information is a cumbersome task. The guides do not provide any screenshots or diagrams.
LANDesk offers many levels of support and support agreements in addition to help features such as technical phone support, a knowledge base, forums and downloads that can be found on the vendor website.
We find this product to be of average value for money in the category of anti-malware management. We think of it as the physics PhD who applies for a job at a grocery store. The large amount of capability would be better applied for full endpoint security. The bottom line here is that, if you're looking for a malware management tool, this product is way too much.
