Liaison, an integration and data management specialist, has announced the launch of a cloud-based tokenisation service.

Formerly known as nuBridges, it said that the Tokenisation-as-a-Service (TaaS) has been designed for national and multi-national companies that want to protect personally identifiable information and electronic health records to improve security, reduce risk, ease compliance and minimise data security costs.

Hosted by Verizon Business on its Computing-as-a-Service (CaaS) platform, it uses the Token Manager technology to protect credit cards and other types of structured sensitive data in a PCI compliant cloud. To use TaaS, customers enable one or more of their systems to interact with TaaS via web services.

Gary Palgon, Liaison's vice president of product management, said that the cloud-service was developed as a third party. Usually a credit card provider is used but they do not have to deal with management and administration and security of sensitive data.

“This is an on-demand service and the user can redeem, as they can feel it is their data and if they want to move from one payment provider to another, then they can. Also its not putting a limit on the data, there are no return limits on it and after a certain time you can still access it, but we don't usually see much demand after 18 months,” he said.

“The problem is between the two, what if you want to switch provider? You can do what you want as you do not hold the tokens in either enterprise. With on-premise you are given more access to the cloud and shown how easy it is to connect to the cloud.”

Liaison also said that by offering format preserving tokenisation, both on-premise and as a managed service in the cloud, customers have a choice on how to tokenise any type of confidential information.
