McAfee has announced that it is to expand its existing application protection in its Firewall Enterprise appliance product line.

It claimed that this will give security administrators visibility, recognition and policy enforcement of over thousands of applications that are invisible to conventional firewall technology.

Dan Ryan, executive vice president and general manager of the network security business unit at McAfee, said: “McAfee Firewall Enterprise already provides comprehensive application threat and malware blocking, as well as industry-leading URL filtering and TrustedSource reputation-based blocking capabilities. Now, we're raising the bar to give customers an unprecedented level of application protection.”

McAfee has also appointed George Kurtz as its executive vice president and worldwide chief technology officer. He will be responsible for product innovation and will facilitate mergers and acquisitions and business development activities.

He will also spearhead McAfee's ‘Office of the CTO', where the regional CTOs will advance McAfee's understanding of regional markets and drive products that meet their unique local country/government requirements.

Kurtz said: “I am excited to play such a pivotal role on the executive management team. McAfee has a rich and powerful heritage of innovation that I will continue to foster. As always, I look forward to helping customers solve complex security problems and solidifying our position as the strategic global leader in digital security.”
