McDonald's adding biometrics-based access management to its menu?

McDonald's has been tinkering with the idea of using biometrics to manage employee access to corporate systems inside its retail locations, said a McDonald's corporate manager at SC Congress Chicago on Thursday.

McDonald's has been tinkering with the idea of using biometrics to manage employee access to corporate systems inside its retail locations, said Paul Munsen, global identity and access management lead at the Oak Brook, Illinois-based fast-food giant, at SC Congress Chicago on Thursday.

“It's something we're definitely looking into,” said Munsen, speaking at a panel session. “We have done some experiments with biometrics, particularly at the restaurant level, and we see the potential reducing fraud and waste.” 

Munsen did caution that companies need to move slowly in introducing biometrics for processes like employee authentication “because it's a lot harder to change out fingerprints vs. passwords.” But he does expect to see more use of the technology in the long term, he added.
