The Optenet Mailsecure Appliance brings all of the features of Optenet software products into one easy-to-manage place. This box features an email filter, anti-virus, anti-spyware and protection against malicious code and spam.

The product has an expansive spam detection system that combats spam on many possible levels, such as reputation databases, shared lists of suspicious addresses, URL analysis and digital signature verification.

Deployment and installation is quite simple and takes just a few minutes. The appliance is deployed inline between the firewall and the network. The IP settings can be easily configured via the LCD display on the front of the appliance. Once the configuration wizard is completed, management is done through the easy-to-navigate web-based GUI.

Policy configuration can be assigned to groups or users and can be based on an already existing Active Directory structure. We found the policy configuration page to be a confusing maze of check boxes and selection.

The box comes preconfigured with a few policies, but to get the most out of the appliance considerable configuration is needed.

This product comes with a small quick-start guide that gives three short steps to get connected to the appliance and run the setup wizard. From there, all other information is contained in a PDF manual. This contains detailed setup information, including a full step-by-step guide of the setup wizard as well as in depth configuration steps. This manual also contains many screenshots and diagrams.

Optenet offers free phone and email technical support, as well as remote installation assistance. For a fee of 15 per cent of the licence customers can get premium support, which includes onsite installations with an account executive. There is no self-support available on the website.

At a price of £1,765 this appliance is good value for money. We did find that it offers some very comprehensive spam detection features, but it is difficult to configure and not as feature-rich as we would have liked.
