Password Manager Pro
Strengths: Solid value, easy to use, with a lot of features
Weaknesses: Documentation could be a little stronger
Verdict: Very good password management product with a few areas that need limited improvement
Password Manager Pro from ManageEngine offers the ability to securely store, access and administer shared administrative passwords. It enables administrators to maintain a secure, centralised vault of passwords, as well as to enforce standard password policies and to control user access to shared passwords. This product also allows the user who adds the passwords to the system to become the owner of the passwords. No one would be able to view the passwords, unless the passwords are shared with others by the owner.
This product is almost as plug and play as it comes. The installation is launched from an executable, which launches an installation wizard. After following a few steps on the wizard, the product installs as a service. After installation, the initial configuration is done by a guided workflow that assists in getting the product up and integrated with the environment. We found this whole process quite intuitive and easy to follow. Further management is done via the web-based GUI, which is easy to use, and which has a well-organised layout.
Password Manager Pro provides support for changing passwords remotely on the target systems and ensures that passwords in critical systems do not remain static. It can integrate and manage passwords for many platforms, including Windows and Windows domain accounts, Microsoft SQL Server, Linux, Cisco devices and Juniper Netscreen firewalls.
Documentation provided was a single HTML-based help file. This includes step-by-step installation and initial setup instructions, along with advanced configuration of features.
While we did like the basic layout of the documentation and the amount of detail, we found overall that it had a lack of screenshots and examples.
Zoho offers several support options through annual contracts. Options include 24/5 phone and email support, as well as access to product updates, upgrades and online resources. There is a free user forum on the website.
At a cost just over £300, this product is solid value for the money. ManageEngine's Password Manager Pro offers a decent set of features in an easy-to-use, workflow-based format.
