The Rio hotel in Las Vegas has defended itself following allegations of malicious ATMs stealing guests' details.

Reports surfaced earlier this week that a malicious ATM had been found in the same hotel that the DefCon conference was being held at.

Meanwhile Chris Paget, who attended the conference and stayed at the Rio hotel, wrote on his Twitter page that several ATMs had been compromised but despite security and management at the Rio hotel being ‘well aware of [the] ATM pwnage', they refused to turn them off.
Responsibility for investigating the claims was handed between the Nevada Gaming Commission and police department, before the secret service intervened.

In a statement, Deanna Pettit, director of public relations for the Rio, Paris and Bally's hotels in Las Vegas, claimed that it was aware of the ATM and alerted the provider.

Pettit said: “On 2nd August, 2009 the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino was alerted by a guest of a malfunction that occurred at a third-party owned ATM located on property.  Rio management immediately contacted Global Cash Access, the owner, operator and maintenance provider of the ATM, to notify them of the issue.

“At the request of the Rio, the affected machine was taken out of service and to date, the Rio is unaware of other ATMs on Rio's property that have demonstrated signs of a malfunction.

“As guest safety and security are of the utmost importance to the resort, Rio officials continue to work closely with Global Cash Access as they take measures to correct what is believed to be a network error on the part of their servicing vendor.”

Pettit stated that any ATM customer who believes he or she may have been affected by the ATM service issues may contact Global Cash Access at 001 800 644 0439.
